The national trade deficit with China on goods only was $491.1 billion in 2018, according to data compiled by the US Census Bureau. This graphic shows how that deficit translates to states, showing imports, exports and the gap between the two measures. Export and import figures are based on the physical movement out of or into the United States. While it is unclear how tariffs may affect the trade balance among states, the export and import figures may change.
